Facts about Pre-Kindergarten
At Bayshore Christian School, we teach a rigorous, systematic approach to phonics which results in reading fluency. We use the Abeka Reading curriculum for 2-year olds through second graders. In K2, students learn to recognize 2-4 letters a month, one color, one shape, and one number in a monthly, themed -based program. The students practice and review these concepts so that, at the end of the year, a two-year old will know the alphabet, basic colors, shapes and numbers.
In the three-year old program, students learn the alphabet sequentially, as well as phonics and the development of handwriting skills. Students learn to form letters correctly using age appropriate writing paper. The three-year olds apply number concepts up to 13 and rote count to 50.
In K4, students learn to read one-vowel words in the first semester and two-vowel words in the second semester. A four-year old applies number concepts up to 20 and rote counts to 100. This is reinforced and expanded in kindergarten, first, and second grades because these are the key grades where reading proficiency is established for life-long learning. An important feature in the reading program is that the complete phonics program is taught in kindergarten through second grade so that even a transfer student is exposed to key phonics training in the early grades, which promotes independent reading in every subject.
